Luigi Mangione Federal Case Update: THIRD Continuance Granted for Federal Indictment!

This many continuances for a federal indictment is extremely unusual...

While my husband was doing a remote hearing this morning, I took the opportunity to pull the latest continuance docs for the federal case, which had previously been continued until tomorrow, 3/19. This federal hearing date represents the deadline by which federal prosecutors must file an indictment, and it has been moved now THREE TIMES. This is truly unheard of, yet, I had a feeling it would happen again in this case due to all of the other anomalies in how this case is being handled at every level.

The original date for the preliminary hearing or indictment filing deadline was 1/18, which was continued at the agreement of both parties to 2/17, which was again continued at the agreement of both parties to 3/19. Now, it has been moved again to 4/18/25, at the agreement of both parties. This means that Luigi will continue to be held in federal custody with NO FEDERAL INDICTMENT for another 30 days, he is being held on a complaint only, while the state prosecution goes forward before the federal prosecution. It’s all unprecedented in every way, and brings up so many questions about his defense.

Why consent to a third extension like this if you’re KFA or Luigi’s legal team? At the hearing on 2/21 in NYC, KFA brought up the delays from the prosecution and the unusual order in which the prosecution is proceeding. Prosecutor Kaplan replied that all the delays and extensions had been granted with the consent of the defense. KFA responded very dramatically, saying “Your Honor, when the prosecution is holding the death penalty over your client, you have no choice but to consent.”

I find this rather odd—perhaps for the first, maybe even the second continuance, I might be able to buy this. But a third? Most defense attorneys would be raising hell by this point about the lack of due process, the unfair treatment, and the federal inability to come up with an indictment by this point. I think the evidence is a complete disaster for the prosecution, and they are having a hard time coming up with how to charge him based on the evidence that they’ll have to turn over to his defense. But what’s up with KFA?
